Cleaning with Vinegar and Baking Soda: What Actually Works (and What Doesn’t)

Here is the inconvenient chemistry: vinegar is an acid, baking soda is a base, and mixed together they largely neutralize each other, leaving you with fizzy salt water. The internet’s favorite cleaning combo is mostly a special effect.

The twist is that both ingredients, used separately, are genuinely excellent — cheap, effective, low-tox, and suited to opposite ends of the cleaning spectrum. The Mixing Myth, Handled Honestly

So is combining them ever justified? Twice, barely:

The fizz agitates loose gunk and the hot flush carries it off. It freshens a sluggish drain; it will not clear a true clog — that is a job for a drain snake or a plunger.

Where NOT to Use Them

Keep vinegar away from:

  • Natural stone — marble, granite, travertine, limestone countertops and tiles. Acid etches the surface permanently, leaving dull spots no polish fixes. Stone gets pH-neutral cleaners only.
  • Hardwood floors and waxed wood: repeated acid dulls finishes and can cloud wax.

  • Rubber gaskets and seals — the washing-machine caveat again: occasional is fine, constant is corrosive.

Keep baking soda away from:

  • Anodized or bare aluminium (discolors it) and delicate glossy finishes — gentle abrasive is still abrasive; test somewhere hidden.
  • Wood furniture finishes, where paste residue lodges in grain and micro-scratches gloss.

Never, ever mix vinegar with:

  • Bleach — the combination releases chlorine gas, which is dangerously toxic even in a small bathroom. This applies to “just a splash to boost it,” too.

The Honest Limits

Respecting these two cleaners means being straight about what they cannot do:

  • They are not disinfectants. Vinegar reduces some microbes; it does not reliably kill the ones that matter after handling raw chicken or during a stomach bug. For those moments, use a product whose label says disinfectant, and follow its contact time.
  • Baking soda is not a degreaser for heavy jobs. A range hood dripping with polymerized oil wants hot water, strong dish soap, or washing soda — baking soda alone will be scrubbing all afternoon.
  • Vinegar’s smell is temporary but real. It dissipates as it dries; if it bothers you meanwhile, ventilate or infuse the bottle with citrus peels for two weeks before use.
