Frost Protection: What Actually Needs Covering, and When

Most frost damage in gardens is avoidable, but not by covering everything. It comes down to knowing which plants are genuinely at risk, understanding why your garden has cold spots, and covering the vulnerable at the right moment — which is usually before dusk, not at bedtime.

Frost is the weather event that costs gardeners most, and the losses are largely avoidable — though not in the way people usually attempt it. The instinct when a frost is forecast is to cover everything, which is exhausting, unnecessary, and occasionally harmful. The plants that need protecting are a small and predictable group, and protecting them well depends more on timing and technique than on materials.

Containers: The Special Case
