Houseplant Light: The Thing Everyone Gets Wrong

Almost every houseplant problem traced back far enough turns out to be a light problem. The trouble is that human eyes are terrible at judging light levels — a spot that looks perfectly bright to you can be near-darkness to a plant.

Trace almost any houseplant problem back far enough and you arrive at the same place. The leggy stretching, the leaves that get smaller each time, the variegation fading to plain green, the plant that has not grown in a year, and a good share of the overwatering deaths — they are light problems wearing other costumes.

The reason light causes so much trouble is not that it is complicated. It is that human eyes are spectacularly bad at judging it. One correction worth making: "low light tolerant" does not mean "prefers low light". No houseplant actively wants darkness; the tolerant species merely survive it, growing slowly and staying alive where others decline. Give them more light and they do better — they simply do not die without it.

Aspect and What Is Outside the Window

  2. Move it to a better window if you have one, checking the sky test rather than the compass alone.
  3. Clean the glass and the leaves. Dust on a leaf blocks light at exactly the point of use.
  4. Rotate a quarter turn at each watering so growth stays even instead of lunging.
  5. Acclimate gradually when increasing light — a plant grown in dimness can scorch if moved straight into strong sun, exactly as the succulent guide warns.
