Homemade plant feeds range from genuinely effective to complete folklore, and the two are often recommended in the same breath. Here is the honest sorting — plus the distinction that matters most: feeding the soil is a different job from feeding the plant.

Search for homemade plant food and you will find eggshells, coffee grounds, banana peel and comfrey recommended in the same paragraph, as though they were equivalent. They are not. Some homemade feeds have real substance behind them; several of the most-repeated ones are essentially folklore, and mixing the two makes it impossible to know what is worth your time.

Understanding What Fertiliser Labels Mean

Fertiliser packaging carries three numbers, usually shown as N-P-K, and knowing what they mean makes every feeding decision easier. Signs of Over-Feeding

Under-feeding is visible and easily fixed; over-feeding is subtler and does more damage, so it is worth recognising. Making Compost Tea, Honestly

Compost tea — steeping finished compost or worm castings in water and applying the liquid — is widely promoted, and deserves a measured assessment.
